TurboTEL 2013

provided a nice overview of AR and some ideas for use in an educational environment, but I’ve written about it elsewhere , so am moving on…. …Making to most of Mahara ePortfolios showed some imaginative use of the open source ePortfolio system,... The day moved on to a look at some great ‘on the hoof’ audience participation tips for using voting pads and reference to groups of medical school students using these to vote for revision topics (and not waste time going over already familiar... However, with four presentations running simultaneously at any one time this can make choice vast but difficult for those who have the misfortune of wanting to go to two presentations running at the same time: it’s like Sky+ without the ‘+’.... The premise of TurboTEL is great: all presentations have to be delivered in 10 minutes, meaning that delegates can attend up to 12 presentations in one day, and meaning that all presentations have to be straight to the point. When their pages had been individually customised (many looking oddly reminiscent of early MySpace pages) and their work uploaded and assessed, each student’s ePortfolio can be stored as an HTML zip file and transorted / uploaded elsewhere,... I mentioned this year’s JISC SW TurboTEL in my last post here . I try to get to this particular event every year, and have presented at the last 3 events. To replace a Virtual Learning Environment with an ePortfolio may sound like an unworkable mash up on paper, but with a heightened element of student ownership, no passwords and the security of a secret URL to send to invited people only,... With Cardiff University looking at using Mahara as their own ePortfolio system, it may be worth taking a look at a JISC publication: Crossing the threshold. The first workshop I went to: Creating interactivity: going through technologies may not have had much new to show, it’s always heartening to see someone demonstrating stuff who speaks well, knows what works, what doesn’t work and how to use the... This negates the need to go to HR every time staff details change and gets rid of the need to repeat details that are on other sites such as Linkdin. Me up next…and I gave a presentation about content creation because it’s another thing that’s quite prominent in ILT at the moment, and could be a useful thing to for teachers and students to be aware of too. You all happen to use Google to search for the exactly the same thing, using exactly the same search term. After a whistle stop tour of questioning styles (which took me back to my teacher trainer days) we looked at the mimio – still doing the rounds after so any years, and still spending most of its time falling off a whiteboard. Here I learned that (apparently) audience engagement levels are 4 times higher when watching a film with captions but that captions often don’t relate information as accurately as they should. Talking to presenter beforehand confirmed something I have suspected: that ePortfolios are Marmite, and staff and students either love or loathe them. ePortfolios have been in the ILT ether for several years, yet there is still little take up, and what take up there is is currently not ‘brilliant’. I keep getting adverts for sofas in Cardiff (I happened to be looking at the DFS website as few days ago), and money off offers for cosmetics for over forty year olds. These can simply be…linked in. Again, the secret URL allows for invitation – only viewing, so makes for an interesting use for the software. Use of ePortfolios should be embedded into institutional strategies and the curriculum design & review process. You expect to be presented with the same list of results…but each list looks different. Back in 2009, Google hid a clause way, way down their list of terms and conditions. The next presentation, linked explicitly to the previous, showed how Plymouth College of Art are using Mahara as a professional portfolio with staff profiles, resumes, records of practice and details of research all added. For me, we need to have a sense of where the institution will be 3 or 5 years down the line. We should aim for consistent use across all programmes to make the experience simpler for all, so it may be worth setting up communities of users. In a brave move, no prior training was given to staff or students, who were simply let loose on the system. I think that a single login is also important, and if implemented, it’s important to collect evidence of emerging benefits to show other staff members down the line. Systems like Socrative allow people to share a mobile device and make duel responses. Finally, ePortfolio activity needs to be regularly reviewed and an ongoing part of the planning process. Curiously, some staff and students at the same institution are using Mahara as an alternative to Moodle (and Word). It told the use that it was starting its personalised search programme. Vitally, time and money will also need to be spent in order to implement a range of proper support strategies. This then, teamed with students’ smartphones and tablets makes a lot of sense. As a regular user of YouTube, I was a little ashamed to realise that it’s possible to caption a video on the ubiquitous site very simply. I have recently been drawn to BYOD and web-based voting sites and the ability to do more that have ‘yes / no’ or multiple choice questions.

Are you in favor of blocking military funding to Syria? Read this bill?

This would not prevent humanitarian aid but would block all military aid. The bill would ban the Department of Defense, the CIA and all other intelligence agencies from funding any military, paramilitary or covert operations in Syria. The legislation would not affect humanitarian aid. All four Senators have spoken out strongly in opposition to President Obama's decision to arm rebel groups in Syria. Udall, Murphy and Paul, all members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, cast the lone votes in Committee against authorizing the President to arm and train rebels fighting the forces of President Bashar al-Assad in an ongoing civil war. Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.): "I am deeply disturbed by the current situation in Syria and atrocities committed by President Assad's regime and other militant groups inside Syria. Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT): "The conflict in Syria has been going on for over two years, yet there are many questions surrounding the composition and goals of Syrian opposition groups and the interests of U.S. national security that need answers. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT): "I'm deeply skeptical about plans for military intervention in Syria, given the dangerously fractured state of the opposition, and the very real risk of American weapons and money falling into the hands of the same terrorist organizations we're already fighting around the world. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY): "The President's unilateral decision to arm Syrian rebels is incredibly disturbing, considering what little we know about whom we are arming. Engaging in yet another conflict in the Middle East with no vote or Congressional oversight compounds the severity of this situation. SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE. This Act may be cited as the "Protecting Americans from the Proliferation of Weapons to Terrorists Act of 2013". SEC. 2. PROHIBITION ON FUNDS TO ESCALATE UNITED STATES MILITARY INVOLVEMENT IN SYRIA. (a) In General.-Except as provided under subsection (b), no funds made available to the Central Intelligence Agency, the Department of Defense, or any other agency or entity of the United States involved in intelligence activities may be obligated or expended for the purpose of, or in a manner which would have the effect of, supporting, directly or indirectly, military or paramilitary operations in Syria by any nation, group, organization, movement, or individual. (b) Exception.-The prohibition under subsection (a) does not apply to funds obligated for non-lethal humanitarian assistance for the Syrian people provided directly by the United States Government, through nongovernmental organizations and contractors, or through foreign governments. (c) Duration of Prohibition.-The prohibition under subsection (a) shall cease to apply only if a joint resolution approving assistance for military or paramilitary operations in Syria is enacted. (d) Quarterly Reports.-Not later than 90 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, and every 90 days thereafter, the Secretary of State shall submit to Congress a report on assistance provided to groups, organizations, movements, and individuals in Syria. (e) Non-lethal Humanitarian Assistance Defined.-In this Act, the term "non-lethal humanitarian assistance" means humanitarian assistance that is not weapons, ammunition, or other equipment or material that is designed to inflict serious bodily harm or death. http://www.paul.senate.gov/?p=press_rele ase&id=866

This isn't the first time we've done this and its only ever ended badly for the United States. During World War Two we funded Vietnamese rebel groups to help fight the Japanese. Among these fighters was Ho Chi Minh who lead North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. The second occurrence was when we trained and armed the Mujaheddin during the Soviet war in Afghanistan (1979-1989). The Mujaheddin won and eventually became the Taliban. One of their members, Osama Bin Laden, formed Al-Qaeda. These actions have only led to us arming our future enemies, and I think its time we learned from history.

What exactly do you do in an Intel MOS: Marines and Army?

35F Intelligence analyst in the Army. 0231 intelligence especialist in the Marines.

Depends on the MOS. In the Army MI covers 23 separate MOS. Edit: As a junior 35F the name sounds a lot sexier than it actually is Back in garrison (stateside not deployed) you will have a couple of daily responsibilities 1. Physical Security - which in reality entails managing the battalion key control program. You can imagine in a battalion with 600+ people and thousands of pieces of equipment how many keys you have for rooms, storage buildings, vehicles, gates, etc, etc. All of those have to be constantly and properly accounted for and issued out and collected back. That is what a junior 35F has the pleasure of managing. 2. Security Clearance Packets - managing the submission and preparation of packets for people's security clearances. 3. The S-2's (Intel Officer) b*tch boy. Prepping PowerPoint slides for the S-2 to brief. Deployed you will be entering intel from the field into the intel database, updating the SITMAP and preparing intel reports.

About this book
Security: A Guide to Security System Design and Equipment Selection and Installation, 2ed is the first comprehensive reference for electronic security systems. In eight chapters, it guides the reader through selection, installation, testing, and maintenance of security equipment in 35 categories, from interior and exterior sensors to security systems, The uninformed purchaser, the security-conscious manager, and the novice security practitioner will find that this book demystifies the "black art" of security systems design via clear descriptions of operation principles and extensive practical advice. The more knowledgeable reader will find a unique reference and compendium of information usually found in many separate sources. Each device explained in this book is broken down into sections covering its principles of operation, uses, applications, equipment types, and advantages and disadvantages. This important reference outlines the data objectively, enabling the reader to independently make informed judgments about competing bids or proposals, compile a brief, and design or maintain a security system.Neil Cumming is a partner at Dodd, Cumming, and Love, Consulting Engineers in Plymouth, England. As Projects Manager for all security projects, he is directly responsible for the design of all security systems from inception to completion for a variety of clients. In this role, Mr. Cumming has designed and supervised the installation of security systems on private and military sites throughout Britain and the Middle East. Starting working life as an apprentice electrician, Mr. Cumming later studies at the City University, London, earning a degree in Building Services and Environmental Engineering. It is a comprehensive reference for electronic security systems.Guides the reader through all aspects of electronic security systems from selection to maintenance.Uses detailed descriptions of operations principles and practical advice to make the use of security systems easier to understand.

    Great Duty Belt

0 4/5 Indebt - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Modular Equipment System Belt For Security & Police (Misc.) I am satisified with the belt and some of the accessories. I use it as a spare and off duty jobs. Its light wait and serves its purpose. Excellent product. The only complaint is that one of the accessories was not manufactured correctly (deffective item). The item can be used to put a cell phone or audio device. Unfortunatly, I am unable to use it cause the openning is deffective and will not allow any items to be placed inside. It is almost sown shut on one side that not even a thin cell phone will fit.For the price and the purpose I am using the gear, it has been perfect. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 7, 2011

As of right now, this item is perfect. I am a DOC (dept. of corrections) employee this belt won't see much "hard core" use. The number of pouches that are included is an excellent bonus. Saves me from having to piece together what pouches and holders I need. Just gotta take off what I don't need and save for the range day. Very happy so farEDIT: After nearly 2 months, this item has more than lived up to expectations. Do get some belt holders though. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 9, 2012

It gets really loud on weekends when the bars are packed and all of my staff can always hear each other perfectly. We have tried dozens of different radios/headsets in the past, and we could never find headsets that allowed us to hear each other.Great product, I would recommend to anyone looking for good quality headsets to use with their 2 way radios. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 25, 2008

A close miss. Good features and sound, wire's too short, cheesy clips.

The design of these headsets intends for the user to place the mic/ push-to-talk button down a sleeve and attach the clip for the acoustic earpiece directly behind the neck in order to conceal the hollow coil from front and side view as much as possible. In order to accomplish this, the wire from the acoustic earpiece has to be long enough to reach from center-neck to about four inches beyond the wrist. In this way, the user activates the PTT button using thumb and forefinger and speaks into the cupped palm. Here is the near miss aspect of these units: The length of the wire from the earpiece to the PTT switch/mic is 24 inches. Twenty-four inches is almost laughably short for those who have arms longer than twenty inches. I don't know anyone, outside of children, who might have arms that short. After plugging these in and running the wires, it immediately became a matter of finding some appropriate microphone wire to use to splice in a 15" section of wire to make... 4/5 D L (WA United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) So far everything is great!

This product is amazing.Highly durable and very strong.Looks well put together.Plus the tip is ridged. You could beat someone up with it, or use it to break glass in an emergency. The light is very bright. If you shine this light into your own or someones eyes, they will see nothing but the light. After you stop shining it in the eyes, the person will feel disoriented, not see clearly, and have a very hard time reading for a few minutes. The stun gun is Powerful. Safer at Night

I bought the first one for my wife, who sometimes has to leave the office at night and walk 1-2 blocks in a high crime area. While, I wish that she would leave during daylight hours or carry a gun, she is not comfortable with that, nor do we want to deal with the aftermath of lethally shooting someone.I spent some time training her and she is now ready to use it. Here's what she does:1. Puts the lanyard on her wrist. This is important so she doesn't accidentally drop the light or have it knocked away.2. Uses the flashlight to illuminate her path. It is very powerful light, with a good wide throw and helps her to see her surroundings well. What is an added plus is that if she is approached, by an attacker, she can direct it to shine in their face which will temporarily blind/disorient them...and what happens when someone shines a bright light in your face? Good for the money

I was pleasantly surprised by how decent this stuff was. I wasn't expecting Bianchi Accumold. Just looking for a decent belt for use on the shooting range and maybe during an emergency. I've worked security for 8 years before switching careers so I've worn a lot of belts. This stuff is pretty decent. The belt is great, easily adjustable. One nice touch, the pouch items have Velcro on the inside so they will stick to the inside of the belt and not move around. Cuff case is decent. The baton holder so-so, it was too loose to hold on to my Asp. Probably want to skip it. O/C holder is good, for the 1oz size. I wish it had a 3oz holder. Cellphone case is nice, can be used a a glove holder. It also has this tall thing which sort of seems like an O/C holder but is too tall even for the 3oz cans, not sure what it's even for. But it might be useful for carrying something. The double mag pouch is nice. Key holder works fine, the clip is a little cheesy so putting your keys off and on all day... 5/5 Andrew A. 0 1/5 Glen M. Greer (Delray Beach, FL USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Security: A Guide to Security System Design and Equipment Selection and Installation, Second Edition (Paperback) 10 years is a long time in high technology, and alarms sytems are based on high technology. So this book is now of mainly historical interest and for background reading.Compounding this issue for non-UK residents, is the fact that the book was written in the UK, by a UK engineer about UK alarm sytems. These differ quite significantly from those used in the USA. There are different regulatory standards and quite different customs and practices. When published, the book was an exceptionally useful volume and it highlighted for me the mystery of why there was no equivalent in the USA, nor is there today. Mr. Cumming should update his book and someone in the US should take it as a model for a book about US alarm systems. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , April 22, 2002

I'm not sure how long it will look new with the sunshine baking on the plastic camera. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 6, 2013

This camera is the perfect product for the money

0 5/5 Steve Flanagan - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Sunforce 82340 Solar Fake Security Camera with Blinking Light (Automotive) Bought this camera as an additional camera to my security system. Basically I put it out in plain view, hung a cat-5 wire from it like authentic cameras would have. Figured Id give the thuglets something to see and throw rocks at while the real cameras were catching the action. Still working great after several months 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 31, 2013

What do you do when it needs repair?

0 2/5 RILKA (SAN FRANCISCO CA USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Standers Security Pole and Curve Grab Bar, Metallic Black (Health and Beauty) December 14 2009I was as enthusiastic as anyone when I got my Standers securuty pole. I no longer needed assistance when I got up from my chair, nor did I fear falling, as I had done many times before. I used to hold it lightly for balance when trying my Wii Fit routines. I purchased the pole from Amazon on May 24 2009. A week or so ago, I grabbed it to get up & instesd of the curved piece staying in place,it moved roumd as climbed leaving me in quite a pickle. It continues to swing free. It no longer stops at evety 45 degrees. The whole central part of the pole swings. So it is only useful if I can reach above this area. I have not been able to find a customer service website for Stander. I am past the time when I can return it to Amazon. Do I expect to buy another when it lasted less than 9 months? Hardly! But I hope somewhere someone has a similar product wuth a long warranty. This would have been a rave 5 star review if the product had been longer lived. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 14, 2009

    Are Your Ceilings Perfectly Level?

The Standers Security pole is well made and sturdy. It has only a few simple parts to put together. It even looks attractive, which is pretty amazing considering it's size. Despite all that, I had to return mine. If your ceilings are not perfectly level, then the top pole will be at a slight angle when the "H" shaped ceiling base is tightened up against the ceiling. There is no adjustment for pitch or angle. The bottom base also has no adjustment for angle/pitch. So the top pole which is at an angle must be joined to the bottom pole which is vertical. The two poles are attached together with a locking thread ring, there is no adjustment for differing angles. You can feel the threads slightly binding as angled threads meet vertical grooves. The Security Pole will bow in the middle to compensate and the top brace will no longer be completely flat against the ceiling. My elderly Uncle was a machinist who still appreciates well designed equipment. 0 5/5 Lauren S. - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Parent Units 2 Pack Equipment Safety Straps, Black (Baby Product) I was pulling my hair out looking for baby proofing stuff that wouldn't require a hardware install. These are perfect for my 50" plasma. Just a note, because I didn't see it in any of the other reviews... You have to pull the clips open to insert the plastic strap. The instruction page that comes with them doesn't mention how you're supposed to join the clips and it took me a bit of puzzling and trying to thread the strap before I realized you need to snap them open. Maybe I am just slow today, but there it is if anyone is wondering! I will absolutely recommend and buy these again. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 28, 2013
